Our History

While our nation stood on the brink of entering World War I, a small but determined group of Christians in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, earnestly sought a fellowship of believers with whom they could worship, grow in faith, and build meaningful Christian relationships.

Out of this spiritual longing, the Lord graciously provided the vision and resources for the beginning of what would become Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

The early years of the congregation were marked by perseverance, sacrifice, and unwavering faith as members faced the challenge of worshiping without a permanent church home. Despite these difficulties, their commitment to God and one another remained steadfast.

In 1914, the congregation took a significant step forward by acquiring property at 624 Eighth Street SE. The first parsonage was constructed on this site, becoming a tangible symbol of stability, commitment, and hope for a growing church family determined to fulfill God's purpose in the community.

Through the years, Mt. Zion's story has continued to be one of faith, resilience, service, and God's sustaining grace. The legacy established by those early believers continues to inspire us as we build upon their foundation and serve future generations.
